Meeting No. 11 Agenda (3/2/21)

I. Call to Order

II. Old Business

A. Monthly Project Theme: Fable February

B. Virtual Touring Theme: History

C. Game Day

i. Thank you for filling out the survey! The feedback provided will be used to improve our game days. Since a lot of people said the rules are too long and confusing, we will release a more concise version of the rules the Friday before the game day. We will also try to make the Jeopardy game simpler using the suggestions provided. We have 2 more Game Days this year, likely the last two!

D. TED Talks

i. Today, Tuesday (March 2) at 11:59 PM is the last day to get points!

III. New Business

A. Monthly Project Theme: Mystery March

i. This is the last set of new monthly projects for the year!

B. There is no virtual touring theme this month. You may do whatever location you want as long as it is school-appropriate.

i. If you want to tour a place that’s not a museum (e.g. a Greek monument), do some light research and write a paragraph about what you learned.

i. This is a website that introduces students to the basics of computer science. To participate, go to https://studio.code.org/join/ and insert the code QKQJWR.

ii. There are three levels of courses:

a) CS Fundamentals: Express -- 6 Points Max.

b) CS Discoveries -- 10 Points Max.

c) CS Principles -- 15 Points Max.

iii. Maximum points are determined by the maximum for completing the entire course. If you complete part of a course, you will get the maximum amount of points multiplied by the percentage of completion.

a) 50% of CS Discoveries Completed → 10 * 50% = 5 Points

D. Upcycling Projects with Ecology and CSF

i. Every month from March to May 2021, GATE, Ecology, and CSF will challenge members to upcycle a particular object or upcycle something that fits a particular theme, such as flowers.

ii. March Challenge: Upcycle Metal Cans

iii. Point System: Up to 3 Points per Submission (1 Point for Submission and 0-2 Bonus Points for Effort/Creativity), 9 Points Max. Per Month

b) GATE’s Google Form is separate from other clubs. It will be due March 31 at 11:59 PM.

E. GATE X Ecology Club Game Day (**Still Subject to Change)

i. The game day will not follow the schedule for GATE’s game day, it will be following Ecology’s meeting date (March 23).

ii. Kahoot Themes: Environmental and General Trivia

iii. The Zoom link for this game day will be different from the normal link for GATE game days.

iv. There will be a lighthearted rivalry. GATE members will represent GATE and Ecology members will represent Ecology. Members who are in both clubs will be sorted randomly into the two club teams.

a) Club Points: There will be 2 games. Whichever club is in first place for the game will get 3 points. The second place will get 2 points and the third place will get 1 point. Whichever club with the most points will win and the losing club cabinet will have to take a punishment established by a bet. A draw will mean both clubs will do the punishment.

v. GATE members will receive 1 GATE point for participating and 3 points for being in the top 3.

vi. Game Day Logistics:

a) Ecology will first go over their agenda, and then we will have a quick introduction to GATE and Ecology respectively (what they do during regular vs. this school year). After, we will introduce every single cabinet member.

b) There will be 2 Kahoot games, each with 12 questions. Members will have 10 seconds to answer each question. There will be bets after.

F. Projects/Medallions Reminder

i. May 1 is the last day for seniors to earn points and for points to be counted towards medallions and to see who gets the plaques.

ii. Grades 9-11 can still gain points after May 1, which will still be counted towards the medallion but not the plaque.

iii. Medallion Requirements

a) 200 Cumulative Points

b) 2 Monthly Projects for Class of 2021

c) 3 Monthly Projects for Class of 2022

d) 4 Monthly Projects for Class of 2023/2024

e) The college bound prompts and PIQs do not count as monthly projects. You need to do the ones with the specific themes.

f) It’s still possible to earn a lot of points! Go to our website to find all the opportunities. It’s recommended to get 50 points every year and do one monthly project.

g) You can check the cumulative points sheet for your progress on the medallion, which will be fully up to date by this Saturday.

G. GATE Cabinet Nominations

i. Cabinet nominations will occur two meetings from now on March 30.

ii. There will be more information on individual cabinet positions later.

H. Group Photo for Yearbook

i. There will be an additional half point for turning on your camera or changing your profile picture to a picture of yourself.

I. Our next meeting will be a game day, but with a Jeopardy game. It is not the same as Kahoot with Ecology. Members can start choosing teams next Friday on a spreadsheet that will be posted on Facebook and our website along with instructions for Jeopardy.

i. Please sign up on the spreadsheet before game day even if you want to be on a random team. Those who do will get a time advantage for the Jeopardy game, which has these categories:

a) Celebrity Names

b) Disney Movies

c) Four-Letter Words

d) Pop Music

e) Geography

IV. Fun Fact: There are twelve types of rainbows, such as moonbows or fogbows, and there are also fire rainbows.
